Literacy

Primary Focus:
Unit 4: Adventures of Don Quixote
The Big Idea
This unit examines the fiction genre through a classic novel, Don Quixote. Students will focus on character and plot, as well as on literary elements such as characterization, while reading a full-length adapted version of Don Quixote. It is important for students in the upper-elementary grades to be able to read longer works of fiction and be able to trace the development of plot, characters, and literary elements over the course of a novel; this unit will provide students that opportunity. In addition, this adapted version of Don Quixote, written by Miguel de Cervantes during the Renaissance, a period in European history that students will study in the next unit, will expose students to the culturally relevant aspects of the classic novel such as the quixotic nature of the primary character, the relationship between Don Quixote and his sidekick,
  • Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
  • Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, such as how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text.
  • Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., how characters interact).
  • Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language such as metaphors and similes.
  • Describe how a narrator’s or speaker’s point of view influences how events are described.

Primary Focus:
Unit 4 - Multiplying & Dividing Whole Numbers & Decimals
In this unit, students return to the study of multiplication and division strategies, including the standard multiplication algorithm
The Big Idea
In the first two modules, students investigate a number of strategies that capitalize on their estimation and mental math skills and help them continue to develop strong number sense. These include strategies that leverage the relationship between multiplication and division; the fact that 5 is half of 10; the relationships between fractions, decimals, and whole numbers; and the process of doubling and halving. In Module 3, the teacher formally introduces the standard multiplication algorithm after reviewing the area model and partial products. Module 4 reinforces the connection between multiplication and division, using the area model and ratio tables to help students develop a degree of comfort with long division.

  • Multiply and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value and properties of operations or the relationship between multiplication and division.
  • Explain the reasoning behind strategies for computing with decimals to hundredths.
  • Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system.

Unit 4: Astronomy: Solar Systems
The Big Idea

This unit focuses on the scientific concept that Earth is one object in a system of objects in space and that observations of objects in space reveal predictable patterns of motion.
  • Introduces gravity as a pull “downward” toward the center of Earth. It engages students to think about the shape of the Earth and that “down” is a description depending on one’s location across our planet.
  • Support an argument that the gravitational force exerted by Earth on objects is directed down.
  • Support an argument that differences in the apparent brightness of the sun compared to other stars is due to their relative distances from the Earth.
  • Represent data in graphical displays to reveal patterns of daily changes in length and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky.
